Short version: The scene towards the start of the First Avenger featuring Steve standing up to a man heckling a commercial showing supported for the Armed Forces. He gets beat up for his trouble and is rescued by Bucky.
Features great lines such as "I can do this all day" and has Steve trying to use a trash can as a shield.
pre-serum! steve: jumping on a grenade (pepper; open)
The scene starts out with a black and white photo of three soldiers before revealing an American flag and purple heart. A small, sickly blond haired boy plays with metal soldiers in a run down one bedroom apartment. An even sicker blond haired woman lies in bed and watches him with fondness and determination.
"Come up here a minute, will you please?" Just like that the boy drops his toys to join his mother up on the bed. "You want to be a soldier-" She coughs loudly, but doesn't let it stop her. "-Like your father, don't you?"
Steve nods, watching her with worried eyes. "Yes, Mama. More than anything." She looks amused and exasperated all at once. "Well. I imagine that's what Joe would want. You and him. Acorn and tree." Sarah springs into a fresh round of coughs.
Steve presses in a little closer as if trying to stop it. It's no use. She's clearly fighting a losing battle, but again it doesn't detract from her will. Sarah is determined to share this no matter how her body reacts to the exertion.
"Once he got an idea lodged in his head, there was no shaking it loose either. Whatever you dream, you can be, but you're gonna have to fight for it. People are gonna spend your whole life taking one look at your body and telling you what you can't do." She sounds furious about it before adding gently, "But they can't see you like I do. It holds a heart ten times its size." She looks at him proudly, taking his hand into hers and squeezing it weakly. "You've got no quit in you. Just promise your mama... You'll use your head too. Fine line between fearless and foolhardy. Took your father from us way too soon."
Steve accepts her sad words and nods. "I promise, Mama. I'll be careful."
memory two
This memory is a happier one. The radio is playing this gently in a small, run down apartment. Steve is seven years old though still small for his age. Right now he is standing on his mother's toes. The pair are dancing to the music with smiles on their faces. It's clear they abandoned their work (a notebook lies on the table and dirty laundry is laying on the floor) to have a little fun.
"Not so bad, is it?" Steve nods eagerly as he struggles to stay on his mother's feet. "You're a much better dancer than Joe was. He'd always step on my toes." She winks and the pair burst into giggles.
