This better be going through Hello? Come in, Captain Schwarma. Come in. 2468 who do we appreciate So these mermaids are weird and I never thought I'd say this but I'm kind of sick of the attention That was real enough for one day I'll try again tomorrow Someone seems to think we've just gotten separated but if you went home without me that's a real dick move! You get to explain that one to Pepper. I wasn't ever really a big swim fan but now it's decided. I'm filling in all my pools when we get back. Together. Because you haven't ditched me. wait what if I ditched you? I totally didn't mean to okay you can't hold it against me You know what would be sweet? If we got matching tattoos that could talk to each other. Oh I've got a joke knock knock I have to do your parts: who's there, my favorite Avenger who's always so well groomed except when an evil witch takes away your best looks? Me: not you and it blows :'(
Tony, respond. Iron Man, respond. Are you okay? Really worried. I know you're fine, but I would li-- con------ I can buy you a whole wardr---. Don-t as- h--. Are you sa--? Glad you're okay. Glad you're okay. Glad you're okay.
[Zari likes to think that the Legends prepared her for anything. Get caught in a time loop? Check. Search for vampires in Victorian, England? Check. Turning into a fuzzy blue emblem of love in order to save the world? Check, check, check. Turns out, none of those preparations included getting dropped into the deep dark of an ocean with no totem, no means of communication, and very few familiar faces.
It's disconcerting. They have enough air to breathe, and for some reason the air is lasting, but that doesn't make it right. And as unsettled as Zari is, it's nothing compared to the tension that's coming off Steve as he stands at the mouth to the cave, eyeing the ice floes as though he's worried they're going to come for them, and while part of her rationalizes it as just ice, she knows nothing is that straight forward.
This seems deeper than that.
She's been trying to get the watches working again, but even knows when to take a break and come back to it later. Instead, she gets to her feet and makes her way closer, nudging his arm gently.]
[Zari's take isn't inaccurate. He is looking at that ice like it's going to come for him. Steve isn't crazy. It's definitely expanding, but not to the point of being an active threat to him or anyone else. It just brings it all back not helped by being cut off from Tony and Bucky.
Steve thinks about the early days after being found by SHIELD. He remembers exclamations while being paralyzed on the table. How could he be alive? He remembers knowing in his heart he'd never see his loved ones again.
Zari breaks him out of the spell he put himself under with a touch. Steve tries for a smile as he turns to face her.] Hey.
[He shakes his head as if to clear all the smoke out.] Sorry. I got distracted. Did you say something?
[She shakes her head with a small in return, before sliding her hands in her pockets.]
Just wondering where you went.
[Not that he physically went anywhere, but mentally she knows he was somewhere else. She won't push him to talk about it if he doesn't want to, but she's there if he does.]
But the Void is not something that should be tampered with. I am connected to it, and I can utilize the energy within it to access other worlds. It is how I send you all from space to space . . . mortals cannot manipulate that level of energy.
Had I known that that was what the King was planning, I never would have sent you there. The world was doomed the moment it opened.
[ or, at least, so astoria thinks. the rift may have been able to be closed without losing akvos altogether, but astoria will never know, now. it's simply a void, where it once was, to her. she can no longer feel it attached to her being through magic. ]
[It's not too far off from what he thought. Steve knew it couldn't have been them exactly. Trying to stop infighting and risking your sanity to save old men isn't going to wreck a world. Something weird and dark? That will do it, he thinks.]
So Akvos' leadership doomed the world? Not us? I'll be honest that's the take some of the folks are having here and it's eating them alive. At this rate, you're going to have a group too traumatized to do anything on our next mission.
[Zari and Tony especially worry him. Steve can keep going. That's his superpower more than anything the serum gave him. He can't give that same will to the others.] We had a lot of problems while we were there. Our comms were down, we were separated from each other, and so on. What caused that? How can we prevent it in the future?
I could use an explanation on the Void if we could fit that in too.
[ until their world gets flipped turned upside down... again?? he's out and about like he has been most of the time they've been back. he really needs to slow down, but he doesn't feel like he can. ]
Not much. And more than I can count. I'm tempted to read these out to you at this point. It's getting beyond my area of expertise. If we're being honest? I'm a little spooked.
[The vote didn't go with Zari. Hopefully, it's for the best that it didn't go with Zari.
It's not a choice that she's particularly proud of, and she can't claim that it wasn't an emotional one, but it seemed like the right choice to make. The people were disappearing, melting, and the sooner they cut them off, the safer the people would be. It's not a choice the Legends would make, or most of the people at HATHAWAY.
But it is a choice that Zari would make. A Zari before the Legends, before HATHAWAY, before she learned that she could try to make the world better and not just fight fire with fire. She's fairly certain that Steve is a little disappointed in her, but she can't take it back.
Instead she'll just bring over dinner and sit next to him, and wait to see whether or not he's going to express that disappointment.]
[He is a little disappointed in her choice. Steve knows he has to let her have it without complaint. There's really no one way to know for sure who is right or wrong. His choice might lead to more death. He's only doing what he thinks is right just as she is. That doesn't make it any easier.
He offers a muted smile as he accepts dinner.] Thanks, Zari. One day I'll learn to eat during a crisis.

[Also for not giving her crap about it, not that she expected it from Steve but Constantine is Constantine.]
It's been a few days, but I want to make sure that she's not missing because of the ship.

That's what I'm here for. If there's something I'll never forget, it's that it's time to eat.
[Food is a Very Important part of her daily process. She glances down at her own food, before pushing at it lightly with her fork.]
And the food here isn't bad. It deserves to be eaten.
